In the 70-300mm range I would go for (if money permits) the Nikon VR version. The VR is very useful @ the higher focal lengths and the 70-300 Nikon VR is a very good lens in comparison to the 3rd Party varients. I have the sigma 70-300 mm macro (note: not apo dg) and I prefer to use it more than any of my other lenses.
